Abstract
A rapid gas chromatographic (GC) profiling and screening method is described ofr the organic acids in imported scotch whiskies. It involves the solid-phase extraction of organic acids using chromosorb P as the adsorbent and diethylether as the eluent, and then converted into stable tert.-butyldimethylsily derivatives with subsequent analysis by capillary column gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. About 15 organic acids were identified techniques were utilized to classify whisky brands and to symbolize based on organic acid data. When the GC profiles were simplified to the corresponding organic acid retention time spectra of bar graphical form, they presented characteristic patterns for each whisky. Stepwise discriminant analysis performed on the organic acid profiles provided star symbols characteristic of whiskies. And canonical plot provided a strategy for discriminating among imported scotch whiskies.
